Seven dividend-safety checks
Consider the following together, comparing peers and multiple years.
- Payout ratio: persistent payouts above earnings may be hard to maintain.
- EPS and profit stability: one strong year does not establish a trend.
- Operating cash flow: look for recurring cash generation.
- Free cash flow: consider cash remaining after capital expenditure.
- Balance sheet and debt: assess whether financing needs threaten payments.
- Dividend history and policy: review cuts, special dividends and announced targets.
- Industry cycle and share-price decline: understand why the yield is unusually high.
Warning signs
A sharp yield increase caused by a falling share price, weakening earnings, negative cash flow or rising debt warrants deeper investigation. Neither a preset filter nor past dividends guarantees future payments.
